Plan the Perfect Day in Haldimand County
Discover Haldimand with the 2025 Happy Guide
Sometimes, you find a travel gem hiding in plain sight. That’s exactly what happened when I picked up the new Happy Haldimand Guide and decided to plan a day trip through Haldimand County, Ontario. Nestled along the banks of the scenic Grand River and flowing down to the shores of Lake Erie, this region offers a refreshing blend of nature, history, and small-town charm. Using the guide as my compass, I mapped out a mini adventure full of riverside beauty, classic eats, and local discoveries. Spoiler: I already want to go back.
Here's how my Happy Haldimand-inspired itinerary unfolded...
Step by Step, Bite by Bite: Morning Adventures in Caledonia
The day began with birdsong and a riverside breeze as I hit the Kinsmen Park Trail in Caledonia. Winding alongside the Grand River, this peaceful path was the perfect way to wake up my senses and take in nature before the day’s adventures. Whether walking or cycling, the views here are pure Ontario charm.
Next stop: Oasis Drive-In, a Caledonia institution since 1927. I went full nostalgia with a footlong hot dog and a creamy vanilla milkshake, worth the hype. The retro roadside vibe made it feel like I was stepping back into a simpler, tastier time.
Sip, See, Paddle: A Mid-Morning Escape In Cayuga
Fueled by footlongs and sunshine, I made my way to Cayuga for a caffeine fix at The Carolinian Café, a charming little stop known for its cozy vibe and great coffee.
Then came the big choice: adventure or art?
Since I was in the mood for something active, I opted for the Steamboat Alley paddle experience with Grand River Rafting. Launched from York, this scenic trip along the Grand let me glide past lush forests, spot wildlife, and reconnect with the river in the best way possible-on the water.
If paddling’s not your thing, Cayuga also offers great alternatives. I toured the historic Ruthven Park National Historic Site, where I explored the mansion and wandered riverside trails through heritage gardens. Peaceful and inspiring, it offered a deep connection to the past and the natural beauty of the Grand River.
Another hidden gem worth noting is the Wildwood Studio & Art Gallery-a quiet, tucked-away spot where local art meets calm country surroundings. Best enjoyed with a scheduled private appointment!
Bonus Stop Tea and Travel Time at Cottonwood Mansion
One place I wish I hadn’t missed? Cottonwood Mansion. Tucked away in Selkirk, Cottonwood Mansion is a beautifully restored Victorian estate that offers a step back in time. Depending on the season, you might catch one of their elegant Victorian Tea Parties, complete with vintage china, scones, and finger sandwiches.
The mansion also hosts historical events like ghost walks, garden tours, and heritage festivals, perfect for history buffs or anyone craving a quieter, more reflective stop. A charming way to slow down and soak up local history.
Bonus Stop Fields of Flowers at Windecker Woods
On my way to Dunnville, I took a quick detour to Windecker Woods Flower Farm, a seasonal U-pick flower experience that lets you roam the fields and snip your own bouquet. It’s self-serve, quiet, and ridiculously photogenic. Perfect for couples, creatives, or anyone needing a breather in nature.
Afternoon: Sweet Stops and Handmade Finds
In Dunnville, I treated myself to a little retail therapy. Sweet Retro-spect is a retro candy store packed with classic treats, gourmet popcorn, and everything you didn’t know you were craving. It’s the perfect stop for road trip snacks or gifts.
Then I wandered over to the Dunnville Craft Emporium, where over 15 local artisans showcase handmade goods, everything from home décor to one-of-a-kind keepsakes. I left with a few souvenirs and a stronger sense of the community’s creative energy.
Bonus Stop For Animal Lovers - Husky Alpaca Ranch
If I’d had a little more time, I would have squeezed in a visit to the Husky Alpaca Ranch. Where else can you meet friendly alpacas and huskies in one place? You can shop in their farm store or join a hands-on animal experience. Definitely on my list for next time.
Evenings on Lake Erie - Hippo's Restaurant
I ended the day at Hippo’s Restaurant at Mohawk Marina, where dinner comes with a full Lake Erie sunset. This spot combines laid-back lakeside vibes with fresh seafood, cold drinks, and an unbeatable patio view. The perfect end to a perfect day.
